Golf has become a more & more popular way
in which to spend your spare time and relax. There are a number
of different ways to play this game but basically it involves
getting your ball from the tee into the hole on the green in as
few shots as possible.
A golf course consists of 18 separate holes,
each of which has a nominated par. Par for a hole is the required
number of shots for that hole, for example a par 3 means you need
to get the ball from the tee & into the hole within 3 shots.
If you do manage to get your ball in the hole under the designated
par, depending how far under par you are, a name is given to how
you completed that hole. These name are as follows, 1 under par
is a Birdie, 2 under is an Eagle, 3 under par would be an Albatross
and of course a hole in one. If you are unlucky enough to go 1
over par, this is called a Bogey, 2 over is a Double Bogey etc.
Golfers use a selection of clubs which are chosen before the
match begins in which they will use to get their ball from the
tee to the green. Each club has a different purpose. Most of these
clubs will enable you to hit the ball a certain distance, for
example a driver will send the ball the furthest, whilst the irons
are used when you need a shorter distance. As well as these clubs
you have a number of special clubs for certain situations. These
include a putter for the green, a sand wedge for when you end
up in a sand trap or bunker.
A good golfer can also play different types
of shot. These include a low punch to keep your ball under the
wind and backspin so when the ball hits the ground it either stops
dead or starts rolling back on itself depending on just how much
spin you put on it. Another trick golfers can use to their advantage
is draw & fade. This is a technique used to curve the ball
in mid flight. Draw will curve it to the left whereas fade will
send it to the left. This technique is very useful on holes which
have a dog leg or a bend to negotiate before you get to the green.
This type of shot takes a lot of practise and skill. In fact even
some of the best players in the world have got these shots wrong
when they have attempted them.
When you first start playing you will be given a handicap, this
reflects the skill level you have achieved. Your handicap should
become lower as you play more and improve your skills. The reasons
for having a handicap system in golf is simple, basically
it enables you to play someone who is at the same level as you
so you can have a competitive game. Professional golfers do not
use handicaps as they are at the highest level in the game. To
play like the professionals we have the golf
equipment and golf
clubs to help you in our online golf
